Joker Captures Two Academy Awards

The latest incarnation of DC Comics’ Crown Prince of Crime made his mark on Hollywood’s biggest night as Warner Bros.’ Joker scored two Academy Awards on February 9 — Actor in a Leading Role for star Joaquin Phoenix and Music (Original Score) for composer Hildur Gudnadóttir, the first woman to take that honor.

It was Phoenix’s first Oscar (after three nominations), but not The Joker’s. The late Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award in 2009 for his portrayal of the villain in The Dark Knight.

Other winners with ties to comics and superheroes included Snowpiercer director Bong Joon Ho winning Best International Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture for Parasite; Thor: Ragnarök director Taika Waititi took home an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit; and director Matthew A. Cherry & producer Karen Rupert Toliver, who won the trophy for Short Film (Animated) for Hair Love, from Lion Forge Animation (a division of Polarity, the parent company of both Lion Forge Comics and Oni Press).
