During the HBO Max presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, attendees were treated to two exciting updates from the DC Universe.
Aquaman director James Wan will serve as executive producer for Aquaman: King of Atlantis, an animated three-part miniseries that will recount Arthur Curry’s first day as the undersea ruler.
This will be Wan’s third DC project, alongside the Aquaman film sequel and a Trench spin-off.
According to the project’s synopsis: “The series begins with Aquaman’s first day on the job as king of Atlantis and he’s got a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water controlling warrior-princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!”
King of Atlantis will be Wan’s third project with DC; in addition to directing the 2018 Aquaman movie, he acted as executive producer on the short-lived Swamp Thing series for WarnerMedia’s DC Universe streaming service. Wan is currently developing an Aquaman sequel, as well as a Trench spinoff.
“This DC property is a fan-favorite, rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines,” said HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey. “On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit, we are certain Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming.”
Aubrey also teased attendees about the streaming service’s new Green Lantern live-action series from Greg Berlanti.
“It’s going to span several decades on focus on two stories about Green Lanterns on Earth,” Aubrey said, adding that there will also as be a space-bound story “going into the Sinestro story,” referring to the archenemy of legendary Green Lantern Hal Jordan and founder of the Sinestro Corps.
When first announced in 2019, Berlanti called it “our biggest DC show ever made”.
