October 2019 Manga Monthly Roundup

Check out the Manga Monthly, a roundup of the manga highlights in this month’s PREVIEWS catalog brought to you by Diamond. We have an incredibly diverse selection of books headed your way later this year, so be sure to pre-order your favorites today! Don’t forget you can get them at 10% Off while on preorder at MaltaComics!

Dark Horse gets us started this month with one of the all-time greats – Berserk, which will be headed your way soon in its Deluxe Hardcover Edition (OCT190398). Guts, the Black Swordsman, has saved the Band of the Hawk from the Midland army, but he must liberate Griffith, the Hawks’ leader. Imprisoned and tortured, Griffith is in isolation but is not alone. Horrors dwell within the dungeons, where the living envy the dead! This volume collects Berserk volumes 10-12, and makes a handsome addition to any manga bookshelf!

Kodansha Comics has a new series on the way with Drifting Dragons Vol. 1 (OCT192385). Take to the skies with the scrappy crew of the airship Quin Zaza, as they hunt the fantastical giants that rule the skies of their world: dragons! The daily routine aboard an airborne draking vessel springs to vivid life in this exquisitely crafted tale in the tradition of the lush, transporting fantasy of Hayao Miyazaki. Part travelogue, part imaginary cookbook, and part otherworldly slice of life, Drifting Dragons tells the stories of the Quin Zaza and the colorful band of misfits that makes up her crew.

Ever wonder what might happen if Buddha and Jesus got an apartment together? Wonder no more when Saint Young Men (OCT192395) debuts later this year from Kodansha!

This quirky slice-of-life series follows the two prophets as they move in together in 21st century Tokyo, encountering all sorts of modern problems along the way. Of course, few things can’t be solved with a little divine intervention!

King of Fighters is one of the most legendary and influential fighting game series of all time, and it’s headed to a comic shelf near you thanks to Seven Seas Entertainment! King of Fighters: A New Beginning (OCT192411) is a retelling of King of Fighters XIV – so even if you couldn’t quite land that combo move and knock out your opponent, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the KoF action in this new manga!

Sometimes things are just too good to be true, especially when it comes to apartment hunting. In My Room is a Dungeon Rest Stop (OCT192414) from Seven Seas, this particular rental property ends up being connected to a dungeon in another world! Far from being dissuaded, Tooru jumps at the chance to sign the lease, hoping to go from high school dropout to big-time adventurer. He soon encounters a stranded knight: a gorgeous young woman named Ria. Tooru rescues her and takes her back to Earth, where she promptly mistakes him for a Great Sage, seeing normal things like running water for evidence of his powerful magic. Tooru may dream of heroism, but first he has to figure out how to share an apartment with a cute girl from another world!

Can you believe it’s been 20 years since the debut of Paradise Kiss? I feel old just thinking about it… but that won’t dissuade me from picking up Paradise Kiss 20th Anniversary Edition (OCT192426) from Vertical Comics! Ai Yazawa has been one of the most popular manga artists of all time, and her fashion-forward series Paradise Kiss is a huge part of the reason why. This fabulous new edition contains all three volumes of the original series in a single package, and should be a must-buy for manga fans of all ages.

Another classic is going to be headed your way for the very first time: Rose of Versailles (OCT192283), which is finally seeing an English release thanks to Udon Entertainment!

This legendary shoujo series focuses on Oscar François de Jarjeyes, a young noblewoman raised as a son by her father. She’s the commander of Marie Antoinette’s palace guard, and accordingly is privy to both the intrigue and the deceit of France’s last great royal regime. This hardcover edition contains the first 22 chapters of this fan-favorite series, and you should absolutely add it to your collection!

Ready to get spooky? Viz Media has a new volume from Junji Ito, called No Longer Human (OCT192289)! This is adapted from Osamu Dazai’s immortal (and supposedly autobiographical) work of Japanese literature for a stunning new manga form. The imagery wrenches open the text of the novel one line at a time to sublimate Yozo’s mental landscape into something even more delicate and grotesque. This is the ultimate in art by Ito, proof that nothing can surpass the terror of the human psyche.

It’s time to get PLUS ULTRA! The next volume of My Hero Academia (OCT192290) is headed your way soon thanks to our friends at Viz! In the third match of the joint battle training, the students of Class 1-A have their hands full dealing with the unexpected creativity of Class B’s Quirk use.

These matches give everyone a chance to reflect on exactly where they all stand in relation to each other, and on the events in their lives that have brought them to this point. The latest season of My Hero Academia just started airing, so if you want to get ahead on the kind of heroic content that’s going to be headed your way, you better be reading the manga as well!

The Madoka franchise has been turning magical girl tropes on their heads for years now, and Yen Press will be debuting the latest chapter of the series with the first volume of Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica (OCT192333). After seeing an unfamiliar girl in her dreams, Iroha Tamaki finds herself chasing a tiny Kyubey into Kamihama, a city where magical girls gather. What secrets does this city hold, and how will Iroha cope with life as a magical girl herself? A new story unfolds in this manga adaptation of the upcoming mobile game!

Whew, that’s quite a lot of volumes, isn’t it? And that’s just the start of what can be found in the October PREVIEWS catalog, so you should start checking that section on our website today to get the full rundown of manga from these and other great publishers! As always, keep those pages turning and stay tuned for more Manga Monthly in the future!
