The writing on this comic highlights both the strengths as well as the weaknesses consistently found in Scott Snyder’s writing, especially ever since the Dark Nights: Metal crossover of 2017. I find Snyder desperately trying to be Geoff Johns both in style and love for DC lore, digging up obscure parts of the mythos and attempting to reassemble it in a manner to reconcile it with the current landscape of the DC Universe in a parable-like fashion
While the writer’s love for all things DC is extremely palpable – especially thanks to the much sought-after reappearance of certain fan favorite characters long missing from the DC Universe and being fiercely loyal to their depictions – this falls short in execution by being terrifyingly on-the-nose by the heavy use and focus of explicit terms such as the “harmonics of justice” and the like – something Geoff Johns has managed to avoid consistently despite being the one creating whole corps centered around states of being but not being the sole focus of his narratives.
This leads to the narrative feeling very heavy-handed and borderline preachy, which is only saved by actually being both entertaining and engaging thanks to the plot actually being entertaining and the artwork by Jorge Jimenez being nothing short of amazing. While the basic idea weaves a tighter, more intricate and more consistent structure to the DC Universe, had less direct terms been used it would have been proved a read which would not coddle the reader’s intelligence into understanding what the writer is trying to say.
