The Joker has put a smile on the faces at DC.
The WB movie is heading to become the top-grossing R-rated film of all time at the global box office, not adjusted for inflation. Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as the menacing supervillain
The current record holder is Deadpool, the groundbreaking 2016 superhero pic starring Ryan Reynolds, at $783 million in worldwide ticket sales. (Deadpool 2’s earnings were roughly $738 million before a PG-13 cut of the 2018 film brought the movie’s total grosses to $785 million.)
Through Sunday, Joker’s global total stood at $737.5 million after three weekends in release, exceeding all expectations. This means the movie is well on it’s way to break the box office current record.
Joker made domestically $29.2 million between Oct. 18-20 for a North American total of $247.2 million.
It also did great abroad, making another $77.9 million for a running total of $490.3 million. This is the fourth-best international display of all time for a DC movie, falling behind Aquaman ($811.8 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($636.3 million) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($537 million).
Predictions are out that the Joker is expected to make close to $900 million worldwide with the possibility of crossing the billion mark.
When we compare Joker to other R-rated hits, The Matrix Reloaded brought in $738.6 million back in 2003, followed by $697 million for It in 2017 and $622.3 million for The Passion of the Christ in 2003, although figures are not adjusted to reflect inflation.
