Funimation To Bring Robotech To North America

Although it premiered in North America in 1985, the Robotech franchise is still going strong. A new comic book title was recently announced and now Funimation, who brings such legendary anime as Dragon Ball and One Piece to North America, has announced that they’ll be bringing the iconic franchise to the West as well with the catalogue of Robotech’s television and movie adaptations.

Long time Robotech fans found out when Funimation shared the news on their official Twitter Account:

As can be seen from the responses the tweet created, there was a backlash from those who felt that Harmony Gold gave the short stick to the creators  of the 3 anime that formed Robotech and their fans.

Robotech was produced by Harmony Gold by editing together 3 separate anime series from Tatsunoko Studios: Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross. The 1985 show was set in 1999 and began with a large alien spacecraft crash landing on the Earth. Humans scavange the wreckage and use the technology to create “Robotechnology.” Aliens who were following the spaceship are met with a superupgraded Earth Space Defense Fleet who try to hold their own against against a number of alien invaders. The franchise spawned toys, video games, an animated film and even comic books which are still produced to this day.

Funimation has yet to give a precise date when fans can watch Robotech on their platform.

Meanwhile, Colin Decker, the general manager of Funimation, commented on Robotech’s return:

““Robotech is a beloved and foundational series for fans around the world. We are so proud and excited to connect this iconic series with millions more fans through Funimation.”

Funimation has posted an official description for Robotech as follows:

“Robotech: The Series starts as the human race finds itself on the brink of annihilation under attack by a fleet of gigantic alien warships capable of destroying an entire planet in a split second. The only hope for survival lies with the secrets of Robotech, an advanced alien technology which has given humans access to powerful robotic systems and interstellar spacecraft.”

Perhaps this latest event will give incentive for Sony Pictures to go ahead with its plans for a live action Robotech movie.
