Spidey Returns to the MCU

Spider-Man won’t be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. After a public fallout last month, Sony Pictures Entertainment and The Walt Disney Studios have found a way to work together.

On Friday, news broke that Sony and Marvel Studios have re-forged an alliance, which will allow Holland’s Peter Parker to appear in a follow-up to this year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is great news for your kids since that movie ended on a pretty big cliffhanger. According to Variety, Spider-Man will stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Producer Amy Pascal said, “I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it.”

Disputes over the profit-sharing structure put Spidey’s future in the MCU in doubt, much to the chagrin of many fans who had enjoyed seeing Spider-Man fighting alongside The Avengers.

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Feige is slated to produce the upcoming Spider-Man sequel.

This means that:

  • Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a sequel to Far From Home.
  • Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will appear in at least one more non-Spidey MCU movie, probably with some Avengers.

“Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe,” he continued. “He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

The next Spider-Man film will hit theaters on July 16, 2021.
