New BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Reboot Coming to NBC Streaming Service?

Deadline is reporting that NBC Universal has brought on board Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail to headline a reboot of the beloved sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica for its newly unveiled streaming service – Peacock. The series is one of several reboots planned for Peacock.

The original Battlestar Galactica was on the air for all of one season, running from Fall 1978 to Spring 1979.

A 2003 miniseries revisiting the core concept—robots called Cylons are coming to exterminate humanity—served as the backdoor pilot to an eventual four-season run on the SyFy basic cable network (then called Sci Fi). The reboot series, which ran from 2004 to 2008, proved divisive among fans, inspiring passionate responses to both undeniably strong and extremely questionable writing choices throughout its run.

According to the Hollywood trade, Esmail has received the blessing of Ronald D. Moore, who oversaw the 2003-2009 itteration of the series on the then-Sci-Fi Channel. The Mr. Robot creator has a four-year deal with NBCUniversal.

The new show will be “an updated, more modern look at the world” based on the 2004 edition, THR says, not the 1978 original. Sam Esmail is best known as the creator of Mr. Robot. The final season of Mr. Robot will be airing this fall, freeing Esmail up for other projects. He will reportedly also be heading up two other series for the streaming service, including an adaptation of the classic 1927 film Metropolis.

Now Sam Esmail, went on Twitter (see below) to state that he is creating an entirely new show “within the mythology” of the series. In other words, this won’t be a reboot of the misadventures of Apollo and Starbuck, Admiral Adama and the wretched Gaius  Baltar. It will be a new story entirely, set within the same universe, presumably with the Cylon threat and all the rest.

Peacock will also stream Moore’s Battlestar Galactica for fans looking to get all of their Cylon goodness in one place. Moore also has a new series, For All Mankind, heading to Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV Plus, in November.

Esmail is one of the many showrunners in Hollywood inking overall deals with networks and studios. His deal is with Universal Content Productions where he is just about to wrap on Mr. Robot’s fourth and final season. Battlestar Galactica is his second show on Peacock, following Angelyne, a limited series that stars Shameless actress Emmy Rossum.

NBC’s streaming service, officially titled Peacock, will also play host to a Saved by the Bell sequel series. It will launch in the spring of next year, with original series set to debut in the summer.

Previously, Universal had announced plans for a Battlestar Galactica movie with The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence attached to the project. He previously told Digital Spy that he was looking into the idea of gender-swapped characters.

Peacock is set to launch in the U.S. in April 2020.
