Matt Owens To Be Screenwriter For ‘One Piece’ U.S. Adaptation

Matt Owens will be the main screenwriter for the planned live-action Hollywood TV series adaptation of the “One Piece” pirate manga and anime franchise.

The news was announced in the 34th issue of the Weekly Shonen Jump comic anthology published on July 22.

Owens is known for penning the scripts for “Luke Cage,” a Netflix original series based on the Marvel character, and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” a U.S. TV series also inspired by Marvel’s secret organization.

Marty Adelstein, whose previous works include the “Prison Break” and “Teen Wolf” TV series, is attached as executive producer.

Owens said he is a big fan of “One Piece” and that he wants to do his very best to satisfy long-time fans and attract new ones.

“One Piece is the most beloved story in my life. To be trusted by Oda-Sensei and everyone at Shueisha and Tomorrow Studios to take on the huge task of adapting this epic, heart-warming adventure into live-action is the greatest honor,” Owens said about the anime series.

“I want to make the most of my passion for One Piece by creating a thrilling live-action series which is faithful to the original story and will not only satisfy longtime fans, but bring in new fans as well.”

Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between producer Marty Adelstein (Prison Break, Teen Wolf) and ITV Studios, will produce the adaptation. Adelstein commented on the project in July 2017, stating “I am enthusiastic to give my all to make One Piece succeed. I think this project could set a new record for the highest production cost in television drama history. The work’s worldwide fame merits this scale of production.” Adelstein later stated in December 2017 that the series promises to create “a true One Piece” after he discussed the project with Oda personally. The series will start with the East Blue arc and will “broaden from there.”

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, the original “One Piece” manga series has been running in Shonen Jump. It has spawned an animated TV show, which started in 1999, and many feature films.
