Marvel’s Releases “Incoming” Teasers

Marvel Comics has been busy releasing “Incoming” teasers these last few days’

In the first new cryptic teaser, the original Fantastic Four and several Avengers are gathered in a morgue. A body lies on the table before them; however, a white sheet covers the person’s face and most of their body, keeping their identity a mystery. The text at the bottom of the image asks, “Can you solve the puzzle before the heroes of the Marvel Universe?” Under the tagline, the teaser boasts a large logo that cries, “Incoming!”

Second Teaser

The second cryptic teaser attempts to strike a balance between the street level and the cosmic.

The 2nd teaser is framed around a body, which appears to be a chalk outline with some graffiti reading “2faced” and a warped Hala star. Street level heroes Jessica Jones and a black-masked Daredevil stand on either side of the body. Below, the Masked Rider, donning his Eternity Mask,  targets an as-yet unseen assailant.

It also carries the wording “A Glimpse of Eternity”. The image this time is signed by artist Valerio Schiti.

Who is the Masked Raider?

The Masked Raider’s identity is still a mystery but on one of the final pages of Marvel Comics #1000 readers are promised “the face behind the mask is revealed” in 2020.

The Eternity Mask is an ancient artifact that provides its wearer unlimited power on paper and was reintroduced in Marvel Comics #1000. After being used in several historical uprisings like the American Revolution, the dark mask has been worn by several surprising heroes with deep ties to Marvel’s eight-decade history.

The Masked Raider is one of Marvel’s oldest heroes, having been created by Al Anders, for Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. Jim Gardley debuted as a cowboy hero alongside the original Human Torch, wearing a mask that covered his head in order to  protected “the poor and the oppressed” in the Wild West from the 1840s until 1880. The death of this long-forgotten hero is revealed in Marvel Comics #1000, wherein another character,  Dr. Matthew Masters ends up wearing the mask and becomes the Black Rider after a ttempting to heal Gardleys’s wounds from a gunfight.

Readers discover in the final pages of Marvel Comics #1000 that another new character called the Masked Raider is introduced wearing the Eternity Mask. This Masked Raider’s identity is a mystery but we do know that he also wears a cowboy hat, carries two revolvers and a domino mask like previous western cowboys depicted in Marvel titles.

Third Teaser

The third teaser  shows Professor Charles Xavier, Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto and En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse together on a puzzle piece. Professor X holds a flower resembling those he’s turned into designer drugs as leverage to get other nations to legitimize the mutant nation of Krakoa. It’s unclear at this time just how Incoming might connect to House of X and Powers of X, which are still ongoing but will have concluded by the time the event rolls around later this year.

The teaser boasts a large logo that emphasises, “Incoming!” under the tagline. Last month Marvel dropped another Incoming! teaser; this one pictured an unknown figure flashing a sword in true He-Man fashion (He-Man stories are published by rivals DC Comics), with ominous-looking eyes in the background and the tag, “One will unite them!”

“This really sets the course of what you’ll see in the Marvel Universe in the years to come,” Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski said of the August teaser.
