What’s Up With Marvel’s Avengers: Captain America’s New Redesigned Costume & Shield

The internet has been ablaze recently due to Square Enix’s upcoming Marvel’s Avengers set to be released next May, the bulk of the reports centering on Captain America’s iconic costume and shield.

It’s very easy just to cut and paste a character from the comics or from the MCU but Square Enix did not choose this path. Given that Steve Rogers/Captain America, who has a long and storied history, has had a lot of costumes over the years, making designing a new one for him particularly difficult. But in a recent teaser it was quite clear Square Enix did not take the cut and paste approach.

Through a recent number of tweets, Square Enix creative director Tore Blystad recently explained a bit further for fans what went into the character design and the challenges involved, saying, “The design is a balancing act that pulls from the past to create a modern adaptation of Jack Kirby’s original designs.” When the character first debuted in the 1940s, his costume emphasized patriotism over pragmatism. The costume had no neck, wings that emerged out the side of the mask and a triangular shield.

While the new video game design keeps the costume’s patriotic elements, it’s also modernised to give Captain America a more up to date militaristic look. In fact the mask is practically a helmet, and the padding around the torso and joints further bulletproof the star studded soldier. The wings at the side of the helmet are confined to a decal rather than poking out, contributing to “a contemporary interpretation of the beloved Marvel heroes with an eye towards believability.”

This version of Steve Rogers kept with the more classic disc-shape he is universally associated but newer design elements have also been added to the look.  The star is now at the shield’s center reaching outside the field of blue in its backdrop. “As the Avengers expand to the West Coast and beyond, Cap needs a shield that represents their new role,” Blystad explained.

Not only are the new design choices representative of the video game’s fleshed out and storied world, but they also show Captain America adjusting and fitting in with the rest of these Avengers. Given Tony Stark is another prominent member of the team, its members would get upgrades from his as well, and Square Enix confirmed, “Within our world, Tony Stark often has a hand in the finishing touches of each suit.”

The Square Enix version of Captain America prefers practicality in his choice of costume including his toes – the boots are tightly-knotted military grade, and there are clear design choices tying in with the character’s military roots.

One can speculate when it comes to Marvel and modern videogaming, this will not be the only costume/skin Steve Rogers will wear. They can expect a classic WWII suit, an alternate U.S.Agent look or a Nomad costume.

Marvel’s Avengers is scheduled to launch on May 15, 2020 for Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
