Robert Pattinson will soon be wearing the cape and cowl to play Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie, but before that, he will star in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, which is currently in production. Twilight star Pattinson defintely is having a blockbuster 2019 given he is receiving plaudits for his performance in Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, but the cherry on the cake is the coveted role of the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
And with director Matt Reeves joining the actor, they’ve certainly stirred up a lot of buzz for the upcoming movie. But they’re still existing in the shadow of Christopher Nolan, the director who brought to life the fan-favorite The Dark Knight Trilogy that for many is still the standard among many comic book fans.
In a recent interview with Variety, Pattinson himself has admitted that he’s gone to Nolan for advice. “I was talking about things to do with the Batsuit,” he said. “How to get more movements in it.”
“It’s so bizarre,” Pattinson said to Variety. “I was like, ‘What a coincidence this is happening. It’s absolutely crazy.'”
Of course, Pattinson is not going to reveal all of the discussions he might have had with the famous producer about his role as Batman. What we do know though is that Nolan will be the mastermind behind the 3rd Batman incarnation in a row.
Nolan was the mastermind behind The Dark Knight Trilogy between 2005 to 2012, which cast Christian Bale as Batman. The British director gave a realistic touch to the comic book movie genre and showed what was possible beyond the movies being just action figures and related collectibles. When 2008’s The Dark Knight hit the screens, things changed even further for the superhero movie industry as it became the first comic book movie to cross the $1 billion threshold. From that point on superhero movies were worth making.
Nolan’s didn’t just keep within the city limits of Gotham but spread his influence to other DC properties. While preparing The Dark Knight Rises, screenwriter David S. Goyer approached Nolan with an idea about a Superman story. The two hatched out a premise and the director took it to the studio for approval. Warner Bros. were impressed and hired Nolan as a producer and Goyer as the writer for Man of Steel.
Nolan would later return as an executive producer on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The director claimed that he only served an advisory role, but Zack Snyder revealed the bigger part that Nolan had in the movie, including the controversial decision to kill off Superman.
“It was pretty early, and [Christopher] Nolan and I had long conversation about it, a really great, sort of philosophical conversation about it,” Snyder told Collider. “He was really cool because he played an amazing devil’s advocate about why not to do it, and then in the end was like, ‘No you’re right, it’s better to do it.'”
Nolan is not the type of guy to have his name fixed to a movie title in the hopes it do will do well in the box office either. Nolan is known to take an active role in the projects he is attached to and provide valuable input. Eventhough, Nolan was not directly responsible to choose Ben Affleck to play the Batman, he had access to the casting information and involved in decisions that shaped the character.
“When they told me that Ben [Affleck] was interested in doing it, I thought, ‘How thrilling!’ This is the guy who just won Best Picture as a director and as an actor,” Nolan said to The Daily Beast, “and I thought it would be a great thing that he’d be willing to do this.”
The likelihood is that Nolan’s influence on Affleck’s Batman and the DC Extended Universe was diluted when WB Studio Execs interfered to make changes they felt suitable; regardless Nolan did leave an impact on the DCEU’s Batman.
Given Pattinson is working closely with him, one can expect Nolan to guide Pattinson into the role of the Dark Knight but providing insight and experience. But one also must accept the fact that Nolan is no longer involved with DC therefore his influence may not have such an impact as before and others in top positions will shape the new Batman.
Most likely, the Batsuit that Robert Pattinson will be wearing in Matt Reeves’ film is not the same as any that came before it, but there are probably only so many ways to make a Batsuit; in fact, most superhero suits have similar restrictions and thus Christopher Nolan’s advice will still be valuable. That advice will hopefully come in handy and we’ll get a Batman from Robert Pattinson that is physically convincing and allows the actor’s performance to shine through the suit.
From what is reported the script for The Batman is finally completed and it could begin shooting early next year for a June 25, 2021 release date.
