Alexander Skarsgard To Star as Randall Flagg In The Stand

Collider is reporting that Emmy winner Alexander Skarsgard  has been cast as Randall Flagg in CBS All Access’ upcoming limited 10 episode series adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel The Stand. CBS All Access declined to comment.

Skarsgard is coming off a role in HBO’s Big Little Lies; which won him an Emmy, a SAG Award, and a Golden Globe. He also appeared in the HBO series True Blood as well as The Legend of Tarzan. He’ll also star in Godzilla vs. Kong when it debuts next year.

The news comes on the same day that King and Whoopi Goldberg took to The View to announce that talk show host and Academy Award-winner will join Jovan Adepo, Owen Teague, Brad William Henke, and Daniel Sunjata (Rescue Me) on the series, which also includes previously-announced cast members James Marsden, Amber Heard, Odessa Young, and Henry Zaga.

The Stand takes place in the very near future after a virus developed for biological warfare called Project Blue kills 99% of the population. The remaining survivors create communities that coalesce around two leaders, one of which, in Las Vegas, is lead by Flagg, who King describes as “an accomplished sorcerer and a devoted servant of the Outer Dark.”

Flagg is a pivotal character in The Stand as he runs Las Vegas in a truly demonic fashion and attempts to lead the survivors down a dark path. Randall Flagg, aka The Walkin’ Dude, aka The Man in Black, aka many other names, is one of Stephen King’s most iconic villains. He is an ageless man of considerable supernatural ability whose goal is chaos and destruction.

His rival, Mother Abigail, offers a peaceful haven for survivors as the two factions slide towards war. Mother Abigail will be played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Alexander becomes the second Skarsgard to play an iconic King villain; his brother Bill stars as Pennywise the Clown in the IT movies. Bill also starred in Season 1 of the Stephen King-inspired anthology series Castle Rock.

As for King, the author is set to write the last chapter of the series – providing a new aspect to the ending not found in the book. The new adaptation stems from director Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars), SEAL Team creator-executive producer Ben Cavell, and CBS Televisions Studios. Boone and Cavell are writing the adaptation, with Boone set to direct.

The Stand doesn’t have a release date yet. But the project is expected to arrive in 2020.
