Marvel’s ‘Incoming’ Comic Event Sets the Table for 2020

Marvel Comics has released a mysterious teaser for a one-shot titled Incoming, hinting at a big cosmic event this December that’ll redefine the Marvel Universe.

The visual shows an unknown figure wielding a sword He-Man style, with ominous-looking eyes in the background and the tag, “One will unite them!” It’s a very cryptic tease that doesn’t give much away, but with so much information being disseminated at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, it’s no surprise Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort expressed excitement at what’s to come.

“This really sets the course of what you’ll see in the Marvel Universe in the years to come,” Cebulski said in a statement. We could be looking at an Asgardian or someone wielding the Gorr the God Butcher’s Necrosword, but until more info is released, fans will just have to keep guessing.

Marvel’s website does have an insightful nugget, though, stating this one-shot will “shape the future of Marvel Comics into 2020 and beyond. From a single moment in the pages of the Dark Phoenix Saga to the events of Marvel Comics of today.” It remains to be seen exactly who this character could be, but it’s very clear he’ll be uniting the Marvel Universe against a very dire threat.

At the opening of Avengers: Infinity War, Disney set a record of 117 days for the fastest gross to $1 billion, according to Box Office Mojo. With that milestone and with numerous financial records for both Black Panther and Infinity War, it came as a shock to many that the studio would forgo San Diego that year, especially with some big titles hitting theaters in 2019.

But Avengers: Endgame has come (and will return) and may very well become the highest grossing movie ever soon, and Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still up in the air. There are so many ways for Marvel Studios to take over San Diego this year:

  • Farewell to the Avengers: After that death and those splits, we need some processing time.
  • The Avengers are dead. Long live the Avengers: A panel with new stars and an easy flip-side to the first suggestion.
  • Future of the MCU: We can be sure the MCU will continue, with multiple films planned each year from 2020 through 2022, with sequels for Doctor Strange and Black Panther coming plus Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
  • All Black Panther: Seriously, Marvel could just have a single Black Panther panel and we’d be there.
  • Women of Marvel: Very few people would be angry if Marvel finally went all in on inclusivity and used its panel time to announce every female superhero getting her own film, from Black Widow to Ms. Marvel to She-Hulk.
  • 2019 will be different

This year should be a complete reversal. Remember what I said before about Game of Thrones ending its run before next year’s SDCC? Truth is, even though it has, there’s just no way HBO won’t show up in 2019. With reports coming in that Game of Thrones will return for a fan service final panel, there’s very little chance we won’t see HBO in SoCal next month. Here’s how we could see the powerhouse series taking over San Diego Comic-Con:

    • Thank-you/goodbye panel in Hall H: Cast and creators thanking fans with “special footage” and loads of love.
    • Special-edition panel: First looks at the features of a “coming soon” mega-edition Blu-ray of the final season, or even a boxed set of the series.
    • The unveiling of the spin-offs: Trailers and special footage from at least the first of the 2020 spin-offs, as well as panels with the cast(s).
    • A “George R.R. Martin avoids writing by being on a panel” panel: Seriously dude, just please finish Winds of Winter. Please. Fans are literally begging.

As for Disney, it’ll be coming in hot off Toy Story 4, and looking forward to Maleficent 2 and Frozen 2 this winter, 2020’s live-action Jungle Cruise starring everyone’s favorite action star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The studio could also bring trailers or glimpses of its live-action slate of films, like Mulan.

Finally, the recent opening of Star Wars land at Disneyland and the upcoming Disney World version means the easiest Comic-Con option for Disney is showing off a sizzle reel from the opening, and using the opportunity to tease the end of an era, ahead of Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker arriving in December.

I’m obviously already looking forward to Comic-Con’s golden anniversary.

    See you there!
