Hellboy & Devilman Team-up in Japan!

Hellboy & Devilman teamup

Earlier this year, Neil Marshall’s  Hellboy reboot opened in the U.S. on April 12 with much fanfare to the anticipation of Hellboy fans everywhere. The movie starred David Harbour (Stranger Things) in the titular role and was expected to be the first of a string of Hellboy movies. Sadly it was not the success fans hoped for and the movie crashed in Western cinemas.

Hellboy did not perform well at the box office and was throughout the industry considered a flop. The film earned just over $21 million domestically with under $50 million worldwide.

To be fair, the movie was released between a blockbuster packed lineup including giants Marvel’s Endgame & DC’s Shazam. This may have impacted viewership leading to the disappointing attendance in cinemas. Suprisingly, the film has not been screened everywhere though and will be released in Japan on September 27th.

To hype up the film’s debut in Japan, Mike Mignola and manga’s legendary creator Go Nagai are teaming up setting up crossover artwork between Hellboy & Devilman!

Go Nagai commisioned his company, Dynamic Planning, to come up with  crossover artwork depicting the movie version of Hellboy tackling Nimue the Blood Queen – the villain from the movie. Aiding him by his side is Nagai’s infamous Devilman. Nimue is not standing alone against this demonic duo either, teaming up with her Sirène, the bird demon who has been a thorn to Devilman’s side ever since he was created.

Unlike others, Nagai expressed that he was a fan of the movie, being quoted as saying:

“[He] runs through the strange world of witches and monsters. A thrilling dark fantasy movie is born,”

To recipricate the feeling, Hellboy’s creator, Mike Mignola also did a piece of his own. Mignola sketched a black-and-white drawing of Hellboy with Devilman standing behind his shoulder. Both pieces will be displayed at the Go Nagai Memorial Hall in Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture. As part of the hype, other novelty goods and merchandise are being planned to the Hellboy launch in Japan.

Devilman has been around since the 70s having developed a cult following and a number of manga storylines and anime reboots, the most recent being Devilman vs Hades and the Netflix anime adaptation Devilman Crybaby which garnished widespread rave reviews upon release.
