SDCC 2019: MARVEL STUDIOS UNVEIL THEIR FUTURE FILM AND TV PRODUCTIONS

Marvel Studios has taken advantage of San Diego’s Comic-Con to unveil the future productions that will make up Phase 4 of the MCU!

It was the Comic-Con conference that everyone was looking forward to. This night on the stage of Hall H in San Diego,  Marvel Studios, through the voice of their big boss & mastermind Kevin Feige, have finally after much anticipation officially presented their films and series that will compose Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If most of the projects were already expected by fans, the conference still reserved us some great surprises. Let’s list all the announcments!

Black Widow

Not surprisingly, the Black Widow movie will inaugurate Phase 4 of the MCU. The panel provided the opportunity to confirm the main cast of the film directed by Cate Shortland and the identity of the characters they will play: Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), David Harbor (Alexei Shostakov, the former husband of Natasha Romanoff), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova, the future new Black Widow), OT Fagbenle (Mason, a former colleague and love interest of Natasha at SHIELD) and Rachel Weisz (Melina). Presented as an international spy thriller, the film will take place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and will also be an opportunity to learn more about the famous and often mentioned Budapest events. Black Widow will be released on May 1st, 2020 in the US.

The Eternals

As expected, The Eternals will be the second feature of Phase 4 after Black Widow. The panel provided the opportunity to confirm the casting of this film that came on stage and the characters they will play on-screen: Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite) and Don Lee (Gilgamesh). The rumours announcing the participation of Keanu Reeves and Millie Bobby Brown were therefore false. The Eternals will be released at the cinema on November 6, 2020, in the US.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

The third film of Phase 4,  Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12). In addition to the logo and the official title, the Marvel Studios panel was also the opportunity to confirm three actors in the cast lineup of the film: Simu Liu who will play Shang-Chi (bye-bye Ludi Lin), Tony Leung who will play Mandarin, and finally Awkwafina whose role has not been disclosed. Shang-Chi the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released at the cinema on February 12, 2021, in the US.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The fourth film of Phase 4, the sequel to Doctor Strange will be titled  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Still directed by Scott Derrickson, the feature will, of course, once again find Benedict Cumberbatch in the shoes of the mystic superhero, but will also include Elizabeth Olsen whose character,  the Scarlet Witch will team  up with Stephen Strange! The film is also announced as the first feature film by Marvel Studios to be (a little) scary. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released at the cinema on May 7, 2021, in the US.

Thor: Love and Thunder

The fourth and final film in Phase 4, Thor’s fourth solo adventure teased via rumours for several weeks will be entitled  Thor: Love and Thunder! Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) will return as director and Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will be there. Most surprisingly, Natalie Portman will make a big comeback in the MCU. As in the comic series The Mighty Thor (which will partly inspire the film), the latter will receive the powers of the Nordic god. Valkyrie will look for a queen to govern New Asgard. Thor: Love and Thunder will be released on November 5, 2021, in the US.

Blade

For several years rumours have been predicting the arrival of Blade within the MCU. Well, it’s now official: the vampire hunter superhero will soon be back in the cinema! The character will this time be embodied by Mahershala Ali (Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Moonlight) who had previously been seen in the series  Luke Cage produced by Netflix, in which he played the villain Cottonmouth. Announced as a reboot, this new movie Blade has no release date yet.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

In addition to cinema, the Marvel Studios panel also provided an opportunity to talk about the Disney + series featuring several MCU superheroes, starting with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In addition to Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan who will resume their roles as Falcon and Winter Soldier, the series will also be the opportunity to meet up again Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo who will be the big villain of the show. The presence of Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter) which was rumoured to also participate in the show, has not yet been confirmed. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will land in the Fall of 2020 on Disney +.

WandaVision

The second Marvel series to air on Disney +, WandaVision will run surprisingly after Avengers: Endgame. A surprising announcement since Vision is supposed to be dead … In addition to the latter and the Scarlet Witch still played by Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen, the show will also be the opportunity to meet Monica Rambeau, the daughter  of Carol Danvers’ best friend in Captain Marvel who will later become the Spectrum superheroine. The series takes place nearly 30 years after the events of the film, therefore the character should be aged about 40 years. WandaVisionwill is slated to be released in 2021 on Disney +.

Loki

The third series Marvel is to air on Disney+, Loki, unfolded a little more in detail during the Marvel Studios panel. Kevin Feige took the opportunity to announce that the series would begin just after the escape of the character with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. The show will, therefore, feature the 2012 Loki who will travel back in time to modify certain historical events. At the same time, the opposite would have been surprising since the latter is (really) dead, having perished at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. Loki will air in the spring of 2021 on Disney +.

What If …?

This will be the first animated series for Marvel to air on Disney +, What If …?  will be an opportunity to explore alternative realities inspired by the series of comics of the same name. A large part of the MCU cast will be present at the vocal casting of the show, while Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) will be the narrator. What If …? will be released in 2021 on Disney +.

Hawkeye

The panel concluded with an overview of future Marvel Studios productions and highlighting the Hawkeye series. Jeremy Renner will be back in the superhero costume while Katie Bishop (the new Hawkeye in the comics) will also have a role. Hawkeye will air in the Fall of 2021 on Disney +.

So that’s all we expect from the Marvel Studios for the next three years! Kevin Feige has also completed his presentation by formalizing very quickly other films that will be included in phase 5 of the MCU, namely Black Panther 2, The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Captain Marvel 2, but also the reboots of 4 Fantastics and X-Men. In regards to Spider-Man 3, the Sony Pictures should in due time take the lead to announce its release date which is definitely keyed during the Summer of 2021, which would bring the film into Phase 4. But we will have plenty of time to talk again by then!
