LCG’s – New Versions of Old Favourites

In 2008 Fantasy Flight Games introduced a new way to play classic card games that were out paced by the kings of TCG’s Magic: the Gathering. Their Living Card Games series brought back some of the best TCG’s in a new and less expensive way to play.

Living Card Game and its initials LCG are registered trademarks from Fantasy Flight Games. Fantasy Flight Games defines them as a variant of collectible card games. LCGs have regular expansions and deck-building like TCG’s, but do not have the random rare, ultra rare, common, and uncommon problems of TCG’s. Instead players purchase fixed starter decks and booster packs, LCG’s have core sets, expansion packs, and deluxe expansions. The core sets come with pre-constructed starter decks, and are designed to be self-contained. They can be opened, shuffled, and played or players can customize constructed play with expansions. Expansion packs for the various LCG’s are released on a monthly or near-monthly basis, and have 3 copies of 20 new cards, for a total of 60 cards. Deluxe expansions are released less frequently, and typically contain 3 copies of 55 new cards, for a total of 165 cards.

Malta Comics has several of these in stock now. The LCGs currently in print are:

  • A Game of Thrones: The Card Game (2008)
  • Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game (2008)
  • Warhammer: Invasion (2009)
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game (2011)
  • Android: Netrunner (2012)
  • Star Wars: The Card Game (2012)
  • Warhammer 40,000: Conquest (2014)

Perhaps the most popular lately has been Netrunner. This game was originally released a year after Magic the Gathering and was also produced by WOTC (now a division of Hasbro). In this game it’s the Runner (now referred to as a Black Hat Hacker) versus the Mega-Corporation. The game is similar to the original but not interchangeable. Some of the terms are new as well as some of the mechanics. On the positive side, players of the original have said this is as good or better than the original and easier to build constructed decks.

The store currently has almost 100 expansion packs from the various games as well as some of the starters. We will be adding them to the web store and taking orders for any not in stock.
